New exhibition celebrating Alexandria’s history opened at the town’s refurbished library

A new exhibition celebrating Alexandria’s history opened in time for the new year at the town’s refurbished library.

The museum space sits alongside a newly created, separate multi-purpose area for community use on the first floor of the library.

Both the museum and community spaces are the final elements of extensive renovation works undertaken at the library, including the installation of a new lift in the building making the first floor spaces accessible to everyone for the first time. The museum area has been created in the former Vale of Leven District Council Chamber, where the original wood panelling and windows of the chamber have been retained and features alongside an exhibition of local stories and artefacts.

The display tells stories about the printing and dyeing industry, football, and the Argyll Motor Works with artefacts including Turkey Red fabric samples dating from the late 19th century.

Councillor Martin Rooney, leader of West Dunbartonshire Council said: “The completion of this project is a fantastic addition to a brilliant building and will be a welcome improvement to the area.

“It’s great to see this area of the library being used and accessible to all.

“This will provide a fantastic chance for Alexandria residents and visitors to engage with the area’s history.”

Councillor Michelle McGinty, deputy convener of corporate services said: “It’s fantastic to see this project completed, the investment in Alexandria Library will add to the excellent services already available at the branch. The museum’s extension will allow visitors from the local community and beyond to explore artefacts and commemorate the Vale of Leven’s rich history.”
