'My fiancee wants to teach kids meat eating is 'wrong' - but I don't agree'

Every relationship has its ups and downs - but as long as you value and respect each other then things often find a way of working themselves out.

However, one man has been left reconsidering his relationship after learning his fiancée wants to raise their children on a plant-based diet.

Comparing eating meat to "slavery", she told him how she believes that breeding animals for slaughter is "cruel" and a form of "torture".

Taking to Reddit, he said: "I've been feeling a bit stressed on one huge point of disagreement in my relationship. We don't have kids yet but it's on the cards for next year.

"My partner and I generally agree on most things but we do share some different beliefs. For example, she is Christian, I am not. But we have always agreed our kids can choose to believe in whatever they want to and we will not force religion or atheism on our kids and they are free to make their own choices.

"However my partner firmly believes eating animals is morally wrong and as parents, we have a moral obligation to teach them right and wrong. Not give them a choice but teach them that it's not the right thing."

He argued that humans have been eating meat for at least 2.6 million years - and how vegetarianism is a relatively new concept in comparison, with evidence suggesting it became a point of discussion around 2,600 years ago.

"In her words, we will teach kids not to torture animals or bully kids at school because they are wrong, and we will also vaccinate our kids because it's the right thing to do," he added.

"But we will also teach kids not to eat meat because it causes unnecessary suffering to animals and there is no need to eat meat as you can get all dietary needs through a veggie/pescatarian diet.

"To be clear, I don't believe it's OK to torture animals or be cruel but I also don't believe that eating meat is something that you teach a child that is 'wrong'. It's a lifestyle choice.

"Her point is that decades ago humans thought women not being able to vote and slavery was OK, but that doesn't make it so.

"Yes, she said that eating meat is as bad as slavery - and just because [eating meat] is common now, doesn't mean that it is OK.

"[She said] just because we are at the top of the food chain doesn't mean we can decide what to eat. Apparently it's no different from the stronger man deciding it's OK to sexually abuse a weaker woman."

Commenting on his post, one user said: "If you can't agree on the values you intend to raise your children with, do not have children together.

"If having children is a necessity for marriage then you already know it's over."

Another user added: "There is absolutely nothing wrong with a vegetarian lifestyle, and believing that eating animals is unacceptably cruel is a perfectly valid point of view.

"I honestly cannot fathom why religion isn't a hill worth dying on for you, but this is.

"But if you think it's seriously that important for your kids not to be raised vegetarian, then end the engagement and go your separate ways."

A third user said: "If they want to eat meat it should be their choice and if you cant agree on something like that either split up or don't have kids."
