Common covid symptom almost everyone with Omicron will have

New data emerging from the world's largest covid symptom study has identified the most common symptom in those who contract Omicron.

Covid cases in the UK appear to be levelling off, according to the most recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). That said, case numbers remain high, with an estimated one in every 15 people infected in the week ending April 9.

Professor Tim Spector from the ZOE covid study has spoken of a number of new symptoms to be aware of. The professor also said the Government needs to make its messaging more clear.

Taking to Twitter, Prof Spector said that 83% of current Omicron cases present with a runny nose. He also said: "Less than 1 in 3 ever have a fever and one in 5 smell or taste problems - often a few days later but once infection already spread."

Other common Omicron symptoms, he said, include fatigue, a sore throat, headache, sneezing and a persistent cough. Chills or shivers and unusual joint pains were also being reported.

The update comes after the NHS confirmed nine new covid symptoms, after listing the "classic three" (fever, cough, loss or change to smell or taste) for more than two years. The list was amended to reflect new variants of the killer virus.

After listing the symptoms, the NHS website highlights: “The symptoms are very similar to symptoms of other illnesses, such as colds and flu.” Previously, when people exhibited any of the symptoms, “even if mild”, you were advised to get tested as soon as possible.

But as per the most recent government guidance, people are now simply advised to stay home and avoid contact with other people if you have symptoms as well as a high temperature or you do not feel well enough to go to work or do your normal activities.
