Most Australians at elevated risk of serious illness from COVID-19 do not have a GP management plan, research shows, as more than 100 people a day continue to test positive nationwide.

The Pfizer Australia research released on Friday found 74 per cent of those at higher risk from COVID-19 such as older Australians and chronic disease sufferers, lacked a plan with a GP.

It found four per cent of those surveyed would not routinely contact their GP if they tested positive, while 52 per cent thought it would be tough to book in fast for a GP appointment.

Some 89 per cent of GPs reported being concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on their patients, much higher than public concern about the virus, the drug company's research found.

Pfizer Australia and New Zealand medical director Krishan Thiru said more awareness about coronavirus was needed heading into winter.

"As in previous years, we expect another surge in COVID-19 cases as winter approaches," Dr Thiru said.

"Staying up to date with recommended vaccinations, gathering in well-ventilated spaces and mask-wearing when social distancing isn't possible remain important, along with knowing your eligibility for antivirals."

The research comes as COVID-19 continues to impact Australia more than four years after initial local cases, with an average of 117 people per day presenting to hospital with the virus, Pfizer said.

Some 21,827 of 687,639 deaths in Australia between March 2020 and January 2024 were caused by COVID-19, according to federal government data.
