Morrisons is giving away free Christmas vegetables to shoppers - how to get them

Supermarket giant Morrisons is giving away free Christmas vegetables this year to help kids feed Santa Claus' reindeer.

Carrots will be handed out at all of the chain's 498 stores nationwide as part of their festive celebrations - and they have now revealed how you can get your hands on them.

The supermarket chain says they will be sending round the star of their festive advert, 'Farmer Christmas', to deliver the healthy reindeer snack to the shops.

Kids are traditionally asked to leave out a mince pie and glass of milk for Father Christmas, as well as carrots for Rudolph and his seven reindeer friends.

To get their hands on them customers simply need to turn up to Morrisons on the 22 and 23 December, where they will be handed a wonky carrot by a Community Champion.

The giveaway will focus on wonky carrots in a move to encourage families to choose 'ugly' veg more often and reduce food waste.

It is estimated that millions of tonnes of vegetables are thrown away or ploughed back into the field in the UK each year because they are misshapen.

The supermarket also revealed that carrot sales soar during the festive season, increasing by 130% during the week before Christmas compared to previous weeks.

Andy Todd, senior carrot buyer at Morrisons, said: “Christmas is a magical time of year and we want to help our customers celebrate in any way we can.

"Our delicious Wonky carrots are hugely popular as they help our British farmers reduce waste and are a cheaper alternative for customers. We only hope the reindeer enjoy them as much as our customers do!"

Morrisons has also banned all plastic packaging from its Christmas gift wrap and accessories range this year.

The supermarket had already removed glitter from crackers and cards in previous years - and said its latest move will allow customers to enjoy "a more sustainable Christmas".

The decision will remove more than 3.1 tonnes of plastic shrink wrap from its wrapping paper alone, Morrisons said.
