Moore Street Easter market this weekend with live music, crafts and food

Moore Street will host an Easter edition from tomorrow until Saturday.

The market will have food, crafts and live music to get people in a festive mood. It will take place between 11am and 5pm every day.

Moore Street Market manager Christina says this Easter they’ll have "treat boxes containing different kinds of chocolates and Easter eggs and other little treats like that". They will also have different live music gigs every day, as well as kids' entertainment events and egg hunts. All the crafts traders will be making their own special Easter-themed surprises.

On Friday, they have David Griffin, also known as Gaolbyrd. He is a former member of the Irish band New Secret Weapon, who recorded before with a producer of Nirvana and the Pixies. On Saturday, they have trad music from Aisling Keogh and Derek Copley who are local in the Ballyfermot community and run the Ballyfermot trad hub.

Christina said: "On Friday and Saturday, we have special Easter Entertainment from some of our circus performers, and they will be doing face painting for free, and they will be doing bubbles and they'll be doing magic. And then there might even be a little bit of an egg hunt going on, and there'll be treats and surprises for kids.”

Crepe Escape will have special Easter crepes and there will also be a Turkish food stall doing special Easter Turkish treats.

The market manager said they like to call themselves Dublin’s oldest newest market. Christina explains the Moore Street market has been going since the 18th century. "There's been traditional fruit and veg sellers and people selling items on there for hundreds of years.” While the tradition might have “declined a bit” in the last few years, many of the traders have lasted the test of time and are still there. “So, the traders that are still there today have that tradition in their blood for centuries.”

The new Moore Street weekly markets will mark key social, cultural and sporting moments featuring Easter, The Eurovision, Bealtine Festival, Pride, Fifa Women’s World Cup, Africa Day, Heritage Week and a new night-time street Food Festival called ‘Street Feast’ (Mark Stedman)

Recently, Dublin City Council enlisted them to find more modern traders so the market is currently a mix of traditional Irish trades and new Irish and international handmade crafts. “We have jewellery, we have crochets and knitwear, bags. We have Ecuadorian imported jewellery that's handmade in Ecuador by Ecuadorian tribes .

"Then we have Chloe from Groovy Bloom who sells items for smoking – herbal blends, ashtrays and papers and stuff like that. We also have Elizabeth Nouveau, she's a French lino print artist who used to have a shop in Manchester that's moved to Kilkenny. She comes to our market every week.

“And then we also have hot food and that would be Delhi2Dublin who are a family from Delhi. They're a husband and wife, Aanchal and Adarsh, and they came here to study.” When Aanchal’s mother decided to move over, she brought her catering business to Dublin. She started cooking all kinds of authentic Indian Street food from Mumbai, Bombay and Delhi that people would struggle to find your typical Indian takeaway here.

The Moore Street Market has special themed events for many major celebrations in Ireland - St Patrick’s Day, Easter, Bealtaine, Pride, Halloween, Christmas. Check out their website to see all their events or if you are a trader and want to have your own stall.
