Mojang doesn’t want you to know about the Minecraft Vanilla Cape

Capes aren’t easy to come by in Minecraft, at least, not without the use of Minecraft mods. These unique cosmetic items are usually only given out to a lucky few for events or limited occasions. In the past, they’ve been given out to Minecon attendees, Mojang employees, or even bespoke ones for specific creators/prominent community members.

One such occasion was recently announced by Mojang where lots of people would be getting their hands on a cape. However, the announcement was quickly removed and fans were left scratching their heads as to whether this cape is just a myth. We’ll run you through the full story so far, and whether or not these Vanilla Capes are truly coming or not.

The Minecraft Vanilla Cape mystery

Our story starts on August 15, around 3pm UTC. A post appeared on the Minecraft.net news feed announcing that the Vanilla Cape was on its way to players soon. This slightly weird-looking cape would be given out to anyone who bought both the Java Edition and Bedrock Editions of Minecraft on PC before June 6, 2022 – the date the launchers were merged into one.

However, this is a very narrow set of people, as an offer existed for many years where anyone who had already bought one edition, could get the other for free. So this cape was going to a select group of people who either missed the offer or made the baffling decision to buy the same game twice.

Whether this was intentional or not, the announcement was taken down just an hour later, including a post on the official Minecraft Discord server saying the same thing. If you still want to view the post, you can do so with the Wayback Machine, but the official link just leads you to a 404 page.

The question of why is still anyone’s guess. Perhaps it was let loose too early, the designs shown in the article weren’t meant to be final, or Mojang immediately changed their minds on the whole idea. Either way, if you’re one of those few people who bought both PC editions of Minecraft, you might be in for a treat soon.
