Met Office warning extended as North East is set for icy surfaces and snowy showers

The Met Office have extended a weather warning as the North East looks set to experience chaos with wintry showers forecast.

The leading meteorologists have issued a 'Yellow Weather Warning' to the region, forming part of a number that are in place across the country for wintry hazards as the cold weather continues into next week.

The country is set to stay cold with the risk of sleet and snow at times continuing, especially in coastal areas, with overnight frosts, severe at times.

The Met Office said that snow showers and icy surfaces will bring some travel disruption to the North East. The warning is in place from 00:00am on Tuesday (December 13) and 12:00pm on Thursday (December 15).

They forecast the following: "Wintry showers will affect many areas of northern Scotland and parts of northeast England during this period. A few centimetres of snow are likely to accumulate at low levels with the potential for as much as 15-20 cm over higher ground.

"In addition, ice is likely to form on untreated surfaces, mainly where some of the showers fall as sleet close to coasts."

They have warned that the following forms of disruption are likely during this period.

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
  • Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Steve Willington, said: “It is staying cold with daytime temperatures remaining only a few degrees above freezing in many places over the coming days and overnight temperatures dropping to -10°C or lower in isolated spots. Although below average, these temperatures are not that unusual for this time of year.

“There is still a risk we could see some freezing fog in places particularly southern England, especially for Sunday and Monday mornings. And there is also a small risk of a band of sleet or snow moving into the far Southeast on Sunday. If this happens it could potentially bring some disruption, especially to rush hour on Monday. A warning has been issued.”

"More severe weather warnings for wintry hazards could well be needed as we head through the weekend and next week. Keep up to date on the latest weather warnings on our website."
