Met Eireann forecaster Evelyn Cusack predicts 'amazing summer’ and explains why storms are named

Met Eireann forecaster Evelyn Cusack has predicted an “amazing summer” ahead for 2022.

Evelyn attended the official launch of Better Ballymun Day at Trinity Comprehensive School and she revealed that the nation is set for a summer of sunshine.

“It’s going to be an amazing summer, I feel it in my bones. I was able to get some vibes,” joked Evelyn as she spoke to Dublin Live.

The forecaster also joked that Met Eireann almost got “hate mail” over the debate of when spring begins.

She said: “When I went to school, the first day of spring was the first of February. But Met Eireann along with the World Met Organisation define spring as March. Some people think that spring starts on the March 21, which is the spring solstice.

“The reason we say March, April and May as spring is because we can define it from one year to the next. If we define spring as to when the first daffodil comes out, when would that be? Our spring is based on temperatures (March, April and May) and the ancient spring for February, March, and April is for the light.”

Evelyn spoke about the changes of reporting on weather in recent years, the weather warnings and the storm names.

She said: “We hope Met Eireann don’t alarm people but weather forecasting has improved an awful lot, even in the last ten years and that’s why we’ve started naming storms and doing the yellow, orange and red warning levels.

“It’s still in refinement and Met Eireann is continuing to develop models so forecasting is improving all the time, so hopefully we are warning people and that they can take action, hopefully save lives, injury and damaged property.”

Better Ballymun in conjunction with Trinity Comprehensive and Dublin City Council are hosting an action day which aims to bring improvements to the community.

Michael D Higgins was expected to attend the event today, but he and his wife Sabina unfortunately tested positive for Covid.

“I’m upset about the President and his wife, I hope he’s well,” Evelyn continued.

“I absolutely adore him, Ireland has been so happy to have him as President, he is loved countrywide and it’s not often you can say that about somebody.”
