Meet the Irish League footballer named after Eric Cantona

Irish League footballer Jamie McDonagh has revealed how he ended up sharing his name with a Manchester United legend.

The winger's birth certificate reads Jamie-Dean Cantona McDonagh, a nod to former Old Trafford star Eric Cantona.

McDonagh - who joined Cliftonville from Glentoran this week - says all the blame lays with his dad Stevie, and joked that he will "never hear the end of this".

The 25-year-old's family are all mad Manchester United fans, and the timing of his birth inspired the middle name.

McDonagh, from Lisburn, was born on May 8, 1996, the same year United won the Premier League and FA Cup double, with Cantona scoring the winner in the cup final against Liverpool.

Belfast Green Party councillor and Cliftonville fan Brian Smyth brought up the name on Twitter, saying: "So Cliftonville have signed a lad who's middle name is Cantona. That's made my day, huge credit to his Da for talking his mother into it.

"When I mentioned Nemanja to my wife, as a middle name, all I got was a dirty look and a firm No."

McDonagh replied: "Yes, all the blame is on my dad. There was no chance my mum had a say. Scored the winner in the FA Cup final, top scorer 95/96 season and win the league 95/96 & 96/97. Never hear the end of this."

In a previous interview, McDonagh said he wouldn't compare himself to King Eric.

He said: “Cantona was a great player; he was probably one of my idols. I didn’t see him growing up but I’ve watched a lot of clips and videos of him and the goals he scored were unbelievable.

“Do I have any stylistic similarities? No, I think he is in a different category and wouldn’t compare myself to Cantona!”

There may be no similarities with their playing styles, but surely we will hear a few chants of 'Ohh, ahh, McDonagh!' at Solitude next season.
