Martin Lewis issues warning to anyone who has a washing machine in their home

Martin Lewis has had some words of warning for UK households who own a washing machine, as the National Grid reports that there could be potential energy blackouts.

The Money Saving Expert has warning washing machine owners the times they should be utilising the appliance, reports MyLondon. The financial guru appeared on ITV's This Morning to give viewers a "general energy security message" that he claims should have "been said more by the Government".

Martin said: "We are looking at energy difficulties this winter. We hope there will not be any blackouts.

“But there are emergency scenarios where power cuts - short power cuts - in different regions are possible that have been put forward by National Grid.”

Peak times for energy usage in the UK tend to range between 4pm and 7pm, during which these times put extra strain on the National Grid system. Using high-power devices during these times could increase the likelihood of systems becoming overloaded, and blackouts occurring.

The National Grid have said that this is the period that a blackout could happen, especially on a "really, really cold day".

Martin went on to tell viewers that they should avoid, where possible, turning on their washing machines or tumble dryers, in a bid to help each other out. He added: "Let’s all try not to put stuff we don’t need to put on between 4pm and 7pm.

“If we can avoid using lots of energy between 4pm and 7pm and it makes no difference to our lives, then we should all be somewhat conscious of that, whether or not it’s cheaper, because it will collectively help us all."

This news comes as certain households were be paid to reduce their energy usage during two days of the "demand flexibility scheme". The National Grid said it would call the second ever live run of a scheme yesterday, which pays businesses and households to turn off some appliances for an hour or two.

The two events occurred on Monday and Tuesday of this week (January 24 and 25), and had households turn off their appliances between 4:30pm and 6:30pm to save money.
