Shamsud-Din Jabbar, the 42-year-old man suspected of driving a pickup truck into a crowd in New Orleans and killing at least 15 people, had a history of driving offenses. According to documents from a US District Court in North Carolina, Jabbar had previously pled guilty to two charges, including driving under the influence in 2015.
In November 2014, Jabbar was found to be driving under the influence of an impairing substance and recorded a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. The documents also revealed that he was driving with an open container of alcoholic beverage after consuming alcohol. As a result, he was charged with Level 5 DWI, the least severe level of the offense in North Carolina.
Following the incident, Jabbar had his driver's license suspended, was placed on probation for 12 months, fined $200, and required to complete 24 hours of community service. Additionally, he was ordered to undergo a substance abuse assessment and treatment, which he had to pay for himself. Jabbar was also directed to participate in any other alcohol/drug rehabilitation program as directed by the US Probation Office.
