The man who drove an SUV through a Christmas parade in Milwaukee killing six and injuring dozens of others has been jailed for life with no possibility of parole.
Darrell Brooks Jr, aged 40, was sentenced by Waukesha County Circuit Judge Jennifer Dorow on 76 separate counts, which included six charge of first-degree intentional homicide and 61 of reckless endangerment to people. Each homicide conviction carries a mandatory life sentence. The judge declined to allow Brooks any part of the sentences to be served extended supervision — Wisconsin's version of parole. The state does not have the death penalty.
Almost all of Brooks' surviving victims and families of those killed asked the judge to deliver the toughest sentence possible during Tuesday's court hearing. According to the Associated Press news agency, Chris Owens, whose mother died in the incident, told Brooks: “All I ask is you rot, and you rot slow.”
Brooks was caught on camera driving his red Ford Escape through downtown Waukesha on November 21 last year while there was a parade in progress. According to records, he had been in a fight with his former lover.
Among the six who died was an eight-year-old boy who was marching in the parade alongside his baseball teammates. Three members of a dancing group known as the Dancing Grannies were also killed. Dozens more were injured as Brooks ploughed through the parade at high speed in his vehicle.
