Man lost chance to see mum for last time after thug put him in coma

The victim of a brutal assault missed the chance to see his mum for the final time because of his injuries.

Peter Gibbons was kicked, punched and bitten by Paul Maylor in a prolonged attack at the flat of a mutual friend in Knotty Ash in January 2020. Maylor was jailed for just under 14-and-a-half years earlier this week for the attack on Mr Gibbons as well as a separate assault on his nephew, both of which left each victim facing life-changing injuries.

Mr Gibbons was attacked after Maylor, drunk and high on cocaine, accused him of stealing money. He was savagely beaten for around 10 minutes, leaving him with broken ribs and vertebrae, a damaged spleen and two collapsed lungs. Damage to his left eye meant he eventually lost sight in it.

During the attack, he believed Maylor was going to kill him. Stella Hayden, prosecuting, said: “He describes how he was on the floor struggling to breath when he heard the defendant say he was ‘going to get some plastic’. He took this as a threat on his life and so he jumped out of the first floor window, went down a drainpipe and then fled and called the emergency services.”

In a statement to the court he explained the attack had far reaching consequences beyond his physical health. When he was taken to hospital he had to be placed in a coma for a number of days and then remained in hospital for four weeks.

Ms Hayden told the court Mr Gibbons’ mum died while he was in a coma, saying this had a “significant impact” on him. Mr Gibbons had also lived with his mother and became effectively homeless in the aftermath of the attack.

Maylor continues to deny the attack on Mr Gibbons’ despite a jury finding him guilty earlier this year. He does admit a separate attack on his nephew, whom he punched once outside a pub. That caused Thomas Maylor to fall backwards, causing three bleeds on his brain.

Maylor, of Clapham Street, was jailed for 14 years and five months for both attacks.
