A horrific crash on The Bucketts Way has killed a man and a young girl, while two other children were trapped in the vehicle after it left the road and went down an embankment in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Police say the 45-year-old man and three children were travelling to a relative's home, and when they did not arrive, officers were alerted at about 1am.
Hours later, around 3am on October 19, Manning Great Lakes officers say they found an SUV overturned down an embankment at Tugrabakh, about a two-hour drive north of Newcastle, where the man and an 11-year-old girl had died, and two young boys aged eight and nine were trapped in the vehicle.
Police say the man and girl are yet to be formally identified.
The boys were rescued by firefighters, assessed and taken to hospital. Their injuries are understood not to be life-threatening.
Police say their inquiries into the cause of the crash are ongoing. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
The crash marks the second and third fatalities in the region overnight after a motorcycle rider was killed in an unrelated incident at Fullerton Cove on Friday afternoon.
Details of this report are developing. It may be updated.
