Major city centre road to be reduced to one lane for eight weeks for 'urgent repairs'

A BUSY main road through Glasgow's city centre will be reduced to one lane for nearly eight weeks for urgent work to be carried out.

Hope Street will be reduced to a single lane between West George Street and West Regent Street from Monday, January 6, as Scottish Water plans to carry out essential sewer repairs.

The water firm has also been allowed to close West Regent Lane to all vehicles between Renfield Street and Hope Street.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water confirmed that all footpaths and businesses will be open as usual on the street.

However, they did warn that some delays are to be expected and that motorists are advised to plan and allow extra time for their journeys.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: “The work is urgently needed to address internal sewer flooding and we will do all that we can to carry it out as quickly and safely as possible.

“We appreciate it is going to be inconvenient for people living in and travelling through the city centre, but this really is the only way we can carry out the repair safely.

“We will work with affected businesses and residents to minimise the impact of the works and we would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.”
