London opens its first rooftop basketball court in Greenwich

Basketball buffs will now be able to shoot hoops with a view of the London skyline, as the city’s first-ever rooftop court has opened in Greenwich.

The new open-air basketball court is situated just a few minutes’ walk from North Greenwich station, on top of Greenwich’s Design District building, with unobstructed views of the O2 Arena and Canary Wharf.

The 9.5 by 23.25 metre court, which has no shaded areas, costs £30 per hour to book, though Design District tenants and Bureau Members will only be charged £15. Hours are strictly limited, however, with the court only open between 6pm—8pm on weekdays and from 8am—9am on weekends and bank holidays.

“Shoot hoops, breathe fresh air, and re-energise with a view. Book by the hour for shooting hoops, matches, and leagues,” advertises the Design District.

Concept Kicks founder Daniel Bailey, a Design District tenant, said of the opening: “The comfort and freedom I have when working alongside like-minded creatives at Design District is one of the best advantages I could ask for as a creator.

“What may be surprising to most is that I initially entered the creative world through a love of basketball, so the news of London’s first rooftop basketball court at the place I work feels like a full-circle moment.”

As well as basketball, the court will also host other sports and wellness activities, including yoga. It’s also available for photos and film shoots, and for events such as brand launches or networking sessions. Design District partnered with UK premiere basketball team the London Lions for the court’s own launch event, hosted by NBA star OG Anunoby.

Jerome Quartey, marketing director for London Lions, said: “As a London-based basketball team, we value creativity highly and place it at the heart of everything we do — both on and off the court.

“We’re delighted to partner with Design District to raise awareness of this awesome space, which boasts a unique rooftop basketball court and a central hub for the creative economies to thrive.

“The court is extremely convenient for the community, so everyone of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy what it has to offer.”
