The NSW Liberal Party will take disciplinary action against several members over an "elaborate and complex" scheme designed to get around internal branch rules.
In a statement issued late Friday, a spokesperson for the Liberal Party of Australia's NSW Division said it was launching the unspecified disciplinary action after "carrying out an extensive investigation" into the matter.
"The NSW Liberal Party became aware of an attempt to circumvent Party rules regarding branch membership through the use of an elaborate and complex system of imitation domain names," according to the statement.
"The Party's response to this matter sends a clear message to our membership that such conduct will not be tolerated."
At least six party members are set to be expelled over the scheme in a move to be ratified on Friday night, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
The rort was based around getting people to sign up to false email addresses and orchestrated via an online email-anonymising company, the newspaper said.
The NSW Liberal Party, in its statement, said it took governance seriously "and will continue to strive to live up to the high standards that the community rightly expects of us".
No further comment would be made with the matter referred to the NSW Electoral Commission, it said.
