The Liberal Party has removed its support for NSW candidate Benjamin Britton after he expressed views that did not align with the party’s position.
During an appearance on rightwing figure Joel Jammal‘s podcast The Ark in July 2024, Britton expressed he believed women should “be removed from combat” roles within the Australian Defence Force (ADF).
He was later appointed for preselection into the NSW seat of Whitlam in December 2024, after an unsuccessful attempt with the former United Australia Party in 2022.

“Basically, long story short, if we’re to fix our defence force, unfortunately, they’re going to need to remove females from the combat corps,” said Britton, who served in the 3rd Battalion Royal Australian Regiment.
“Their hips are being destroyed because they can’t cope with the carrying of the heavy loads and the heavy impacts that’s required from doing combat-related jobs.
“I knew some of the toughest men I’ve ever met in my life, absolute nails. War left them a shaking mess. Drug addicted. Can’t go outside the house because they have panic attacks … If war can do that to them and destroy them, why would you want to send your beautiful women?
“Your females — the ones that are the backbone of your society. Your society only exists because of women … Why would you want to sacrifice them in war, on the altar?”
Britton also shared beliefs that pornography leads to “transgender desires” and gender dysphoria. He also blamed “diversity and equity quotas, and these woke Marxist ideologies” for Australia’s defences weakening.
While the controversial comments were made months ago, they only gained traction last week and prompted the Administrative Committee of the NSW division to ditch Britton and endorse Nathaniel Smith for the Whitlam seat instead.
“This follows a decision to disendorse Benjamin Britton over views expressed which were not previously disclosed and are inconsistent with the party’s position,” a spokesperson for the Liberal Party told the ABC.

Britton’s original endorsement into the usually safe Labor seat of Whittlam was bubbling in the weeks before former Whittlam MP, Labor minister Stephen Jones, retired in January. At the time, Coalition Leader Peter Dutton shared a photo of himself and Britton on Instagram, praising him for his work ethic and sledging Jones in the process.
“Ben’s working hard in his community and standing up for local families and small businesses, drawing on his dedication as a veteran and his leadership in the defence industry,” read a Facebook post shared by Dutton in January.
“This area has been ignored by a local Labor member who is asleep at the wheel, but with our positive plans and an outstanding candidate like Ben, we’ll get this region and our country back on track.”
