Hollywood actor defends dating his nephew's ex-girlfriend despite 'awkward' outcome

Hollywood actor Damon Wayans Sr. has revealed he once dated his nephew’s ex-girlfriend.

The Poppa’s House star, 64, explained that he’d already developed feelings for the unnamed woman when he found out she had been in a relationship with his relative, who is also unnamed.

Wayans said their romance began around 2002 after his divorce from Lisa Thorner and defended the relationship by saying his nephew was never “in love” with the woman.

“I was in love with her, that’s the thing,’ he told former NFL star Shannon Sharpe, 56, on his Club Shay Shay show.

“You ain’t never done the Jackson 5?” he added jokingly, a reference to Jermaine Jackson marrying his brother Randy Jackson’s former girlfriend, Alejandra Oaziaza.

Wayans went on: “I got divorced and I was by myself for two years. And then I saw her [his nephew’s ex] and I was just like, ‘Oh my God. I’m in love.’ And then I found out my nephew had dated [her].”

The former SNL star said he spoke to his nephew to get his blessing before he pursued anything.

“I’m like, you know, ‘What’s up?’ and he’s like, ‘That’s you.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, pass the Courvoisier, let’s go!’ And I went ahead and I fell in love and it was okay,” he recalled.

Wayans added: “Family gatherings is awkward.”

The In Living Color star was married to wife Thorner from 1984 until 2000 and they share four children -Damon Wayans Jr., 42; Michael Wayans, 40; Cara Wayans, 37; and Kyla Wayans, 34.

Damon Wayans Jr. rose to fame alongside Zooey Deschanel on the hit comedy, New Girl, and has worked with his father on several creative projects.

They play father and son in their new CBS sitcom, Poppa’s House, which debuted its first season in October.

Damon Sr. was a co-creator of the show, while his brother Marlon, 52, was a guest star and their sister Kim Wayans, 63, directed several episodes.

Their older brother Keenen Ivory Wayans, 66, created the comedy sketch show In Living Color, which catapulted several of the siblings to fame.

The family is also known for the spoof horror franchise, Scary Movie, which was created by Keenan and stars Marlon and Shawn Wayans.
