Let's never forget

Lanterns form the character for "forget" and the date "1.17" on Monday at a ceremony marking the 27th anniversary of the Great Hanshin Earthquake, which claimed 6,434 lives. As of 7 a.m. Monday, about 4,000 people were present at the memorial service at Kobe East Park in Chuo Ward, Kobe. The lanterns were illuminated to express the determination never to forget the disaster, and silent prayers were offered at 5:46 a.m., the time the earthquake occurred.
