What the Leeds underground map could look like if the city had its own tube network

We can only imagine what it would be like for Leeds to have its own mass transit system. Whether this will ever happen was a big talking point in the General Election just gone, and in many other political debates before it.

While Leeds remains one of the largest cities not to have one, a Leeds resident decided to pull together a map of how a tube system might actually look.

Think about all the areas of Leeds that would be connected - the different lines and stations. Quinn Daley forensically analysed every location in the city to painstakingly create the Leeds Tube Map complete with eight separate underground lines.

For instance, the Skyrack Line stretches from Otley to Birstall Retail Park, calling at Leeds United's Elland Road stadium along the way.

The Allerton Line goes from the White Rose Shopping Centre to Harewood, and there's even an East Circle route from the city centre out to Rothwell and Woodlesford.

The Meanwood Line snakes along the top of the city, all the way from Greenside to East Garforth via Roundhay.

The lack of a tram or underground network in Leeds is something that has plagued successive administrations and leaves us as the largest city in western Europe without a mass transit system.

Believe it or not, there were .

The fascinating plans were kept secret from the public and eventually shelved due to the astronomical costs - but it's proof that there was once huge ambition to make Leeds "the envy of the country".

The current reality for our city is major investment in bus services.

Leeds City Council is investing a mammoth £270 million until 2026 to double the number of bus passengers across the city.

The plans will also see much of Leeds city centre transformed, with The Headrow, the Corn Exchange and Leeds bus station given an overhaul.
