These days we are constantly being told we're doing the most menial of tasks incorrectly, from brushing our teeth to straightening our hair it seems we've been getting things wrong.
And if all of that weren't enough, people are now up in arms claiming we've been making a big mistake with our laundry too.
A TikTok user named Allison Delperdang went viral this week after admitting that she doesn't wash her pyjamas after every wear, instead, she washes them after wearing them for a few days.
This seems harmless enough, but her video quickly sparked outrage with many flocking to the comments to share their horror over this, saying it feels "dirty" due to all the sweat and "dead skin cells".
Others weren't bothered by the idea and agreed with Allison that changing their PJs every few days was the way to go.
A survey of 1,000 men and women from the UK conducted by Marks and Spencer has recently found that 9% of people are washing their pyjamas daily, while 39% wash them every two to six days and 36% only wash them once a week.
Their research concluded that "generally for personal hygiene reasons, it’s advisable to wash your pyjamas once a week" but an M&S spokesperson added that if you tend to have oilier skin you should "consider washing them more frequently."
We double-checked this advice with an expert in all things laundry to settle the pyjama debate once and for all.
Deyan Dimitrov, the founder of Laundryheap shared his rule for washing items such as pyjamas, as well as a top tip to keep the colours looking good as new for as long as possible.
He told The Mirror: "How frequently you wash some clothes can be a matter of personal preference. Some things you'll definitely need to wash after one wear, such as underwear, but with others too much washing or washing in the wrong way may actually cause damage.
"Because pyjamas aren't typically coming into contact with the outside world, they tend not to get visibly dirty. But you are spending a huge amount of time in your PJs each night, which means they'll be picking up things like sweat that do mean they require regular washing."
He continued: "Whilst there's really no need to wash your PJs after one wear, making sure you're changing your nighttime clothes every couple of nights (or at least once a week) is a good rule of thumb, particularly during summertime when nights are hotter."
The expert added that while washing your pyjamas frequently "most likely wouldn't damage them" as most PJs are made from a cotton-blend material, he warned that doing so could cause the colours to fade - and this goes for anything that spends a lot of time in the washing machine.
So if you want to keep your clothes looking good as new, be sure not to over-wash them and always follow the care instructions.
