Lanarkshire Karate Academy student Emmie McEwan put in an “absolutely outstanding performance” to win gold at the World Karate Federation Youth World Cup in Croatia.
Despite being only 10, the Airdrie youngster won the female under-12 kumite under-30kg section, the first from LKA to win a medal at the prestigious competition.
Head coach Chantelle Allan said: “It’s a brilliant achievement, that’s the highest level for her age at the moment, so that was a really good result.
“Although we take part in a lot of international competitions, it’s our first time at that level, which is the highest level in the world.
“To be there itself is a big thing, and then to get gold was amazing, so it was really good.”
Rochsolloch Primary pupil Emmie has been practicing for four years and will embark on her black belt grading in December.
She triumphed at the international contest in the Croatian town of Porec.
Chantelle added: “We were over the moon, just didn’t believe it!
“We had put a lot of work into it, we did really prepare for it, but to go there and get gold was amazing.
“The intention was to go there for the experience and to give that to the kids, so to get gold was brilliant.”
While the Airdrie club’s members are currently taking a short a break for a couple of weeks, they will be in action again shortly.
Chantelle said: “We’re away to Berlin in September for the International Banzai Cup, and then in October, we’re away to the Belgian Open Championships.”
