Lanarkshire doctor to walk 102,458 steps to raise money for flood victims of Pakistan

A Lanarkshire doctor will undertake a mammoth challenge this weekend when she walks 102,458 steps to raise money for the flood victims of Pakistan.

Dr Farhat Mushtaq, a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at Hairmyres Hospital, will put her best foot forward and walk approximately 60 miles in and around her hometown of Hamilton and Strathclyde Park in Motherwell.

Each step that Dr Mushtaq takes will be reflective of the area involved in the recent devastating floods which have submerged a third of Pakistan (102,458 square miles) with further rainfalls predicted.

Entire communities have been washed away, the death toll is rising and will continue to rise as starvation sets in along with no access to basic medical care.

Dr Mushtaq told Lanarkshire Live : "Floods have devastated Pakistan.

"Official estimates suggest that one third of Pakistan has been affected by the flood. That is an area larger than the size of UK.

"Many people have died. But this figure will only increase as starvation, disease and poor access to urgent healthcare sets in.

"Media images show tragic scenes of young children scraping the bottom of empty cooking pots, parents crying for children who have drowned in floods and the elderly who have nothing left after a lifetimes work - not so much as a morsel of bread.

"The DEC Pakistan Floods Appeal is committed to helping this unfolding humanitarian disaster.

"Please give generously as every pound donated makes a massive difference for example £30 provides hygiene kits for six people, £50 provides shelter for two families and £100 provides food for two families for a month.

"Please donate whatever you are able to the Disasters Emergency Committee through the Justgiving link.

"Each donation counts – no matter what size.

"Equally for anyone wishing to join me for part of the walk is very welcome."

You can make a donation online.
