North and South Lanarkshire Councils came together last night to light beacons at Strathclyde Country Park and celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
The Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Lady Susan Haughey, opened the event before North Lanarkshire Schools’ Pipe Band and South Lanarkshire Schools’ Chorus played and sang, while a lone trumpeter heralded the beacons being lit.
Lady Haughey said: “With Her Majesty celebrating a magnificent 70 years of public service, this Platinum Jubilee offers a wonderful opportunity for communities to celebrate this truly historic occasion.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved at this moment of national celebration – this unique anniversary will provide the chance to celebrate a joyful occasion after what has been a very difficult past couple of years during the health pandemic.”
The beacon lighting kicked off the jubilee celebrations which are to last until Sunday.
