Lady Elsie Robson has unveiled a special bench at the North Tyneside headquarters of the Newcastle Building Society to mark a decade in which the organisation has raised an astonishing £3m for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation.
The money - which has been put towards caring for and supporting those with cancer in our region along with funding vital research - has been raised through what is the foundation's only formal financial partnership.
Lady Elsie, with two of her sons - Andrew and Mark - attended a reception at the building society along with figures from the Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust. The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, set up by the late Newcastle and England football manager in 2008, forms a fund which is part of the Newcastle Hospitals Charity.

Earlier this winter, the two organisations collaborated on a video marking the anniversary, too - and highlighting how the Foundation has helped cancer patients such as Heaton dad Keith Farquharson
Mark Robson, chair of trustees at the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, said: “My dad would be so thrilled by the exceptional support we’ve received from Newcastle Building Society over the last decade. They’ve always understood the importance of the work the Foundation funds, and the difference that makes to people facing cancer both now and in the future.
"My mum, brother and I are extremely proud to be here today to see this new bench unveiled and extremely grateful to the Newcastle for their generous and ongoing support. It is very much appreciated."
Meanwhile, former Morpeth firefighter Glenn Blaney is running a charity golf auction - supported by an astonishing 53 golf clubs across Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Cumbria and even the Scottish borders. The clubs all have contributed a voucher for successful bidders to use to play a fourballs game - with the idea being they can get the chance to play courses they might otherwise not have.
Last year, Glenn raised more than £1,500. Aiming to go even better this year, he said: "I’m really proud to be able to support the work of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and when I explain to golf clubs which charity I’m raising money for the reaction is always extremely positive.
"That says a lot about Sir Bobby as a man, and he’s a personal hero of mine, but also about the way cancer impacts us all and the importance of more research into the disease. It’s wonderful that golf in our region is able to contribute to that."
