More violent than Squid Game? We’re nervous
(Picture: Netflix)The creator of Squid Game is working on a new film, which he said is going to up the ante on his shocking hit series. In an interview with MipTV, Hwang Dong-hyuk said that he was 25-pages deep into “another controversial film” which “will be more violent than Squid Game”.
The film, which has a working title Killing Old People Club, is going to be based on a novel by Italian philosopher Umberto Eco. It’s unclear which of his books – most of which are historically based – would be the inspiration for Dong-hyuk’s new project, but given that Eco’s work includes stories about monks, murder, alchemy and conspiracies, the film is bound to take audiences somewhere deep and dark and weird.
The Squid Game creator said in the interview that he may even need to hide away from people when the series comes out – eek, what is he planning?
Whatever it is, it’s bound to be a massive hit. Squid Game garnered 1.65 billion hours of streaming in just 28 days after its launch and remains Netflix’s biggest show. Bridgerton comes in second, but even the super-popular period romance bonk-buster hasn’t managed to remotely eclipse Squid Game’s viewing success.
Bridgeton series one pulled in 625 million views over 28 days, and its second series, released on 25 March, had 251.74 million viewing hours in its first week – half of that of Squid Game’s 571.76 million hours over the same period.
Squid Game’s premise is that it is a game with very high stakes. Although there is a massive prize of about £28 million to win, players who lose each round are killed. Only completely desperate individuals are willing to roll the dice on their life. Thrilling, right?
Further details about Dong-hyuk’s new film are still under wraps, but since it’s coming from the same twisted mind behind the smash hit – which the creator apparently started writing over a decade ago – there’s absolutely no doubt that it’s going to shock. According to Dong-hyuk, Squid Game was in the bank for so many years because he was waiting for a perfect home for the series, eventually finding it at Netflix.
In the MipTV interview Dong-hyuk said that he would soon be returning to South Korea to write the next series of Squid Game, with a loose aim of releasing it on Netflix in late 2024.
