Kids from Southcraig School have teamed up with dementia patients to learn a new form of sign language called Makaton

Special needs youngsters and dementia patients have been learning a new form of communication.

Makaton is a form of language that uses signs and symbols and kids from Southcraig School linked up with dementia patients at Windyhall Nursing Home to learn the new skill.

Care home manager Fiona Summers, who suggested the idea, told the Post: “The kids and residents really enjoyed it. They found it really engaging.

“For the ones with dementia it has given them another form of communication.

“It’s about engaging the inter-generational connections and this is the vehicle we’re using to have children engage with people that have dementia or communication difficulties.”
