Last Saturday, a remarkable incident occurred in Chile’s southernmost Patagonia region when a 24-year-old kayaker was briefly swallowed by a humpback whale during an outing with his father. The terrifying moment was captured on camera by the kayaker’s father, showcasing the whale surfacing in the Strait of Magellan and engulfing the kayaker, Adrian Simancas, for a few moments before releasing him.
In the video footage, Adrian’s father can be heard shouting instructions to his son, who was eventually spat out by the whale, prompting him to swim towards his dad’s pack raft for safety.
Adrian shared his experience, describing the sensation of being engulfed by the humpback whale as feeling a slimy texture on his face and seeing various colors before being submerged. Despite the initial fear and uncertainty, Adrian credited his life vest for quickly bringing him back to the surface, allowing him to comprehend the situation.
The father, Dell, began recording the incident when he noticed unusual waves and became concerned upon realizing his son was missing momentarily. Fortunately, Adrian resurfaced within seconds, unharmed but undoubtedly shaken by the encounter.

Both father and son expressed their willingness to continue kayaking in the future, emphasizing their determination to return to the waters despite the startling incident.
The Strait of Magellan, known for its outdoor activities and diverse wildlife, is a popular tourist destination offering opportunities to kayak alongside dolphins and humpback whales. These majestic creatures, known for feeding on krill and small fishes, are a common sight in the region and are favored by whale watchers for their playful behavior on the surface.
