Jobs boost for Lanarkshire as Volvo factory looks to drive up numbers

North Lanarkshire is set for an employment boost as a factory that builds dump trucks gets set to drive up its workforce numbers.

Volvo CE Haulers is looking to hire around 100 new employees at its site near Motherwell.

The company designs and builds Rokbak articulated haulers - heavy-duty dump trucks used to transport loads in industries from construction to quarries.

The North Lanarkshire site has been manufacturing off-road trucks since 1950, but the company has had several name changes in that time – changing to Terex Trucks in 2014 when it became part of the Volvo Group, and then to Rokbak in September 2021.

Now, thanks to increased global demand for its products, the company is looking to strengthen its team locally with a variety of industrial and office-based positions available, including: assemblers, painters, welders, platers, machinists, final assemblers, maintenance fitters, maintenance electricians, technical writers, health and safety advisors, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers and buyers.

Both permanent and temporary positions are available, with benefits including hybrid and four-day working weeks, sponsored training courses, up-skilling and secondments.

“After becoming part of the Volvo Group, we’ve benefitted from tens of millions of pounds of investment in our products, facilities and people,” explained Paul Douglas, Motherwell native and Rokbak’s managing director.

“It was clear we needed to rebrand to highlight the huge improvements that we’ve made to our products – the RA30 and RA40 – as well as the entire business.

“The new Rokbak brand is a big success, and we’re seeing huge demand for our products, so we are now back recruiting a variety of jobs, from entry-level to experienced positions, across the business."

Douglas continued: “This is great news for our company but also for the local community.

“It has been a tough few years for everyone, with Covid and the current UK economic crisis, so it means a lot that we have been able to hire, and continue to hire, to help hardworking and enthusiastic people join our team.”

The company also offers a variety of apprenticeship programmes, for both prospective and current employees, allowing them to achieve SVQ, HNC and HND certification, while learning their trade and earning money, as well as degree level qualifications with Rokbak’s graduate apprenticeship scheme.

Applications for this year’s apprentice program are now open. Last year Rokbak took on eight apprentices.

“We have over 70 years of heritage in Motherwell and all the skills, knowledge and experience that comes with that,” added Douglas. “Many of our highly-skilled team have worked with us for decades – like their parents and even grandparents before them.”
