Jeremy Clarkson insists 'kind' Jimmy Carr 'should be allowed to say whatever he wants'

Jeremy Clarkson has defended Jimmy Carr over his gypsy genocide joke.

The Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host said the comedian was 'born' to make people laugh which was the 'single kindest thing one human can do to another'.

He admitted 49-year-old Carr's gag on Netflix may have crossed 'the line"'for some, but added it was a 'joke not a call to arms'.

The 61-year-old said: "Are we now so stupid we can't see a difference between someone with a swastika tattooed on their forehead barking far-right propaganda at half a dozen skinheads, and someone on stage in Southendon-Sea trying to make people laugh?

"It's all just common sense. If you are appearing in a comedy club and you're billed as a comedian and the audience is laughing, then you should be allowed to say whatever you want."

It comes after Jimmy recently admitted that he fears that he is 'going to get cancelled"'following his widely-condemned holocaust 'joke'.

The comic sparked outrage in his new Netflix show His Dark Material show by making an 'abhorrent' remark about the atrocity.

His ill-judged quip referenced the murder of up to half a million Roma and Sinti people by the Nazi regime.

During a recent live show in London, Jimmy addressed the furore when on stage.

He made quips about being cancelled, telling his audience: "The joke that ends my career is already out there."

The comedian opened his show by joking: "Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Look at that, I've already upset the non-binary community.

"That has to be a f***ing record.

"What I am saying on stage this evening is barely acceptable now. In ten years f***ing forget about it.

"You are going to be able to tell your grandchildren about seeing this show tonight.

"You will say I saw a man and he stood on a stage and he made light of serious issues.

"We used to call them jokes and people would laugh."

He later added: "I am going to get cancelled, that's the bad news. The good news is I am going down swinging.

Celebrity Big Brother star Paddy Doherty demanded police probe Jimmy over his 'disgusting' joke (nme/netflix)

"The joke that ends my career it's already out there. It's on YouTube, Netflix, or whatever, and it's fine until one day it f***ing isn't."

Following the controversy, Celebrity Big Brother star Paddy Doherty demanded police probe Jimmy over his 'disgusting' joke about Gypsies.

Traveller Paddy told the Sunday Mirror: “He should be investigated by the police.

“That wasn’t a joke. He’s talking about mass murder being a positive – would he be allowed to say this about black people killed by the Ku Klux Klan?

“There’s a level you don’t go to. More than a million of my people were killed.”
