Japanese authorities have taken swift action by ordering the removal of three 'red rice' dietary supplements from store shelves nationwide following the deaths of four users and hospitalizations of over 100 others. This health scare has raised concerns not only in Japan but also across the region.
The Ministry of Health in Japan has instructed stores to dispose of all stock of Benikoji ColesteHelp, NaishiHelp Plus Cholesterol, and Natto-kinase Sarasara Tsubu GOLD, which are products manufactured by Osaka-based Kobayashi Pharmaceutical. These supplements contain 'beni koji,' which is rice fermented with red yeast known for its cholesterol-lowering properties. However, the fermentation process can sometimes lead to the production of citrinin, a toxin that can cause kidney dysfunction.
A spokesperson for Kobayashi Pharmaceutical revealed that all four deceased users had kidney conditions after consuming Benikoji ColesteHelp. The company initiated a voluntary recall of the products prior to confirming the suspected link with the deaths. An investigation by the firm found unintended substances in some of the materials used in the manufacturing process.
Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has engaged several universities to conduct independent analyses, with a focus on products manufactured between April and October last year. The company expressed deep regret for any inconvenience caused and emphasized its commitment to a thorough investigation.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated that the government is actively investigating the deaths and the potential connection to beni koji, indicating readiness to implement necessary measures.
Concerns have also spread to other parts of Asia where Japanese health supplements are popular. Kobayashi Pharmaceutical issued a warning on Chinese social media platform Weibo, advising customers in mainland China who may have purchased the products online or during visits to Japan to return them.
In Taiwan, the Food and Drug Administration has directed distributors to halt the import of over 150 products containing beni koji, including those from Kobayashi. Similarly, authorities in Singapore recalled a sparkling sake produced by Kyoto-based Takara Shuzo, which utilizes beni koji in its production.
