Japan, several prefectures set daily record highs in virus cases

The national total of new infections with the novel coronavirus exceeded 30,000 on Tuesday, marking a single-day record high, according to data being compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The previous high of 25,990 cases was set on Aug. 20, 2021, according to Yomiuri Shimbun figures.

Osaka Prefecture confirmed 5,396 new cases Tuesday, greatly surpassing its previous record of 3,760 cases set Sunday.

Tokyo logged 5,185 new cases, marking an all-time high for a Tuesday, which was previously 4,534 cases set on Aug. 17 last year.

Hyogo Prefecture confirmed a record 1,645 new cases, topping the 1,342 cases reported Sunday.

Similarly, Kyoto Prefecture saw a record 1,024 cases, breaking the previous record of 847 marked Sunday.

Aichi Prefecture exceeded 2,000 cases for the first time since Aug. 27, logging its second highest figure of 2,145 cases.
