Jamie Oliver raves about £1 air fryer recipe that's 'better than takeaway'

Foodies have been left wowed by a budget curry recipe a chef reckons tastes 'better than any takeaway'.

The mouth-watering meal is one of several dishes that were served up when Jamie Oliver appeared on Jamie's £1 Wonders on Monday. In the Channel 4 show, the celebrity chef shares how to make family favourites for under £1 per portion, and the latest episode was no different, as a number of tasty offerings appeared on the menu.

Jamie polished off crispy pork noodles, meatball kebabs and a carrot puff pastry. He was also joined by fellow chef, Karan Gokani, whose curry recipe delighted fans.

The cauliflower curry and coconut & onion roti – prepared using an air fryer – costs just 84p per portion when made for four people, but it doesn't scrimp on flavour.

Presenting the dish, Karan said: "A humble vegetable turned into something so different. Just elevated and naturally budget friendly. You've got a dish that you can make at home in less than half an hour at less than a quid a portion that's better than any takeaway you're going to get at a fraction of the price when you're feeding a whole family."

Breaking down the costs, Jamie added: "If you want to cook up Karan's cauliflower curry investing in some spices will help turn everyday ingredients into show-stopping meals. Serving four, this beautiful dish comes in at 84p per portion," and fans were quick to agree with his praise.

"Looks fab great meals thanks Jamie always so kind caring stay safe take care xx" said one. Someone else wrote: "We are definitely trying this one", and another agreed: "I will definitely be trying this!"

However, viewers previously criticised the show when it first aired as a one-off Channel 4 special last year. At the time, some fans thought the Waitrose-sponsored show felt 'tone-deaf'.

"What has this country come to. I can't believe on channel 4, Jamie Oliver is cooking canned beans on the stove as the oven costs too much and boiling water in a pan as it costs less than a kettle. Things really have to change ASAP in this country," read one reply.

Someone else wrote: "Loving the show but a millionaire telling me frozen broccoli is better value is a bit tone-deaf." And another thought: "Jamie Oliver doing a show where you can allegedly make meals for a pound in an attempt to help with the cost of living crisis but the show is sponsored by Waitrose. You can't make it up lmao."

But someone else said: "Some of the delicious looking and easiest to make dishes ever on TV. Never mind the cost to make. Well done Jamie," and a different fan wrote: "Great tips and loved every dish shown. Always watch his programs but was seriously impressed."
