ITV's Kate Garraway concerned for GMB colleague Richard Gaisford as siren sounds during Kyiv report

Kate Garraway told her Good Morning Britain colleague Richard Gaisford she was 'very concerned' for him as he broadcast live from Ukraine, with the sound of an air raid siren seeing him rush to put on protective equipment on camera.

The ITV show's chief correspondent appeared on location from Kyiv on Thursday's edition, in the aftermath of the first Russian air strikes against the country.

After Kate and co-host Ben Shephard and viewers at home voiced their concerns for him, Richard took to Twitter to offer assurances on his safety.

Doing a piece to camera, he said: "We are currently in, what we deem, to be a very safe location."

He added: "We have heard sirens this morning, air raid warning sirens is what they sounded like. We know that people are trying to leave the city now, but we feel like we're in a very safe place."

Richard panned the camera round to show that PPE and body armour were to hand and, as he returned to GMB for another live report from Kyiv on Friday morning, he scrambled to put them on as an air siren sounded out around him.

Maintaining composure as he put on a protective helmet, Richard said: "It is a tricky time I think, for many people in the city, who obviously don't have this kind of equipment to hand.

"And, as I look out now, there are still people walking through their streets, walking their dogs."

As the siren continued to sound, Kate told Richard: "We're going to let you get to safety."

He returned for another live broadcast later in the show, with Kate telling him: "We've seen footage of explosions, damaged buildings, reports of destroyed buildings, you've been there to witness a lot of things.

"We're very concerned for you, as is everyone watching."

Richard responded by telling her there'd be a large number of explosions 'on the outskirts of the city,'adding: "They could be incoming missile attacks, they could be outgoing Ukranian fire, but they are destroying bridges."
