Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley has been forced to apologise after calling Sam Smith 'he' during an interview on the ITV breakfast show.
The 66-year-old has since said that he would 'learn' to use people’s correct pronouns after the blunder on Monday morning.
Both Richard and Susanna Reid were discussing Sam's latest music video after it sparked a huge debate online.
In it, the 'Like I Can' chanter dances provocatively in corsets, suspenders and nipple tassels. Sam uses they/them pronouns, but Richard called them ‘he’.
Hi co-star was then forced to but in and remind him of that - and Richard immediately apologised for the error, saying: "I am so sorry. I will learn to do that."
Sam Smith announced they were non-binary in 2019, writes The Mirror.
In an emotional interview, Sam said: “What people don’t realise with trans/ non-binary people in the UK is it’s happening in the street.
“I’m being abused verbally more than I ever have. So that was the hardest part.
“Someone spat at me. It’s crazy. What I find hard is if that’s happening to me and I’m famous, I’m a pop star, can you imagine what other queer kids are feeling?
“And it’s just so sad that we’re in 2023 and it’s still happening.”
