International Yoga Day updates | Yoga India’s gift to humanity: President Kovind

Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed Yoga along with thousands of participants at a mass demonstration in the backdrop of the iconic Mysuru Palace on June 21 and said the physical fitness regime was forming a basis for cooperation among countries, and that it can become a problem-solver.

Meanwhile, President of the 76th Session of the U.N. General Assembly Abdulla Shahid said that the celebration of 8th International Yoga Day under the theme ‘Yoga for Humanity’ could not have come at a more opportune time as the COVID-19 pandemic has upended lives and livelihoods, triggering a deluge of anxiety and depression.

Public performs yoga to mark International Yoga Day in Kalaburagi

The eighth International Yoga Day was organised by the district administration in association with Zilla Panchayat, Sri Sharnbasveshwara Vidya Vardhak Sangha, Sharnbasva University, Ayush Department, and various organisations at the Sharnbasaveshwar Campus on Tuesday morning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s yoga demonstration in Mysuru is also part of the novel programme ‘Guardian Yoga Ring’ which is a collaborative exercise between 79 countries and United Nations organisations along with Indian Missions abroad to illustrate yoga’s unifying power that surpasses national boundaries. 

Since 2015, the International Day of Yoga (IDY) has been celebrated worldwide on June 21 every year. The theme for this year’s yoga day is “Yoga for Humanity”. The theme portrays how yoga served humanity in alleviating suffering during COVID-19.

Yoga enthusiasts performed breath control exercises and body postures on the beach off Gandhi Thidal to mark the 8th International Yoga Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Yoga Day preparations spurred teacher training in Mysuru

In the weeks leading to the preparations for International Day of Yoga held in Mysuru on Tuesday, there was a spurt in training a new crop of yoga teachers who are now set to spread their wings and trigger a new yoga movement in the city of palaces.  

Even before the confirmation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the yoga day event in the city, the Yoga Federation of Mysuru (YFM) – which is an umbrella organisation of various yoga associations and institutions – had started preparations.

As part of observing 8th International Yoga Day, around 700 sports persons participated in the yoga training programme held at the M.G.R. Stadium on Racecourse Road, here on Tuesday.

District Sports Officer N. Lenin and Madurai Division Regional Senior Manager, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, Beulah Jen Susheela inaugurated the event. They addressed the gathering on the benefits of performing yoga on a daily basis.

International Yoga Day celebrated in Salem

International Yoga Day was celebrated at various places in Salem district on Tuesday.

At Periyar University, National Service Scheme (NSS) and the department of Physical Education jointly organised a yoga session in which over 200 students from various colleges and departments participated.

NCC units of Tiruchi Group observe International Day of Yoga

 Nine National Cadet Corps units falling under the NCC Group, Tiruchi observed the International Day of Yoga on Tuesday involving institutions and students from various districts.

As many as 10,055 senior division, senior wing, junior division and junior wing NCC cadets from various schools and colleges from 13 districts including Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Dindigul, Pudukottai, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Ramanathapuram, Ariyalur and Theni participated in the International Day of Yoga organised at 163 locations.

Kashmiri Pandits perform unique yoga in Kashmir

Kashmiri Pandit employees adopted a novel way of using yoga to highlight their demand for relocation out of Kashmir in the wake of recent attacks on minorities in the valley.

The Kashmiri Pandit (KP) employees, who have been protesting since the killing of Rahul Bhat on May 12, observed the International Day of Yoga at their camp site at Sheikhpora Migrant Colony in Budgam. The protesting employees performed various asanas and raised slogans like “we want justice” instead of the vedic chants associated with the practice. While some of these employees pasted placards in support of their demands on their torso, several others wore T-shirts bearing photographs of Bhat.

“We have been sitting here in protest everyday and today through this programme, we want to convey our demand to the state government,” one of the employees said.

Jammu

Northern Army Commander leads 1.75 lakh troops, families to perform yoga in J-K, Ladakh

Northern Army Commander Lt. General Upendra Dwivedi led over 1.75 lakh troops and 75,000 families of the Northern Command to perform yoga and complimented the soldiers for incorporating yoga asanas into their daily routine in extreme high altitude areas.

The Army commander performed various yoga asanas at the forward areas of eastern Ladakh at a height beyond 15,000 feet on the International Day of Yoga, a Defence Spokesman said.

Lt. General Dwivedi is on a four-day visit to Ladakh.

A large number of soldiers under the operational control of northern command and their families performed yoga with great enthusiasm throughout the command areas in the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, officials said.

Maldives

Mob storms yoga day event in Maldives

An angry mob on Tuesday stormed the Maldives national football stadium and attacked participants at the ‘Yoga Day’ event organised by the Indian High Commission and the Maldivian government.

The country’s police force soon arrived and tackled the mob, allowing the event to resume, Male-based officials said. Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih termed it a matter of “serious concern”.

Arunachal celebrates International Day of Yoga in 45 locations

Arunachal Pradesh joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Day of Yoga in 45 different locations of the State.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju led the event at Dong in Anjaw district, bordering China .It is the eastern-most village in India, near the point where borders of India, China and Myanmar meet.

Dong receives the first sunrise in India, thus earning it the nickname ‘India’s Land of the Rising Sun’. - PTI

World benefiting from yoga due to initiative taken by PM Modi: BJP chief

BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda said the whole world is now benefiting from yoga due to the initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Yoga not only makes one physically strong but also provides mental strength, said Nadda, who participated in a programme in Noida, adjoining Delhi, in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of western Uttar Pradesh to mark the eighth International Day of Yoga.

“Yoga is a symbol of healthy body, through yoga we can make our body healthy and beautiful. Yoga not only makes us physically but mentally strong. Today the whole world is benefiting from yoga due to the initiative taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji,” the BJP chief tweeted in Hindi. - PTI

Assam marked the International Yoga Day with sessions across the State, with the governor and the Chief Minister participating at different sessions, along with people from all walks of life, from security personnel to school students. Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi and his wife Prem Mukhi joined yoga enthusiasts at the Raj Bhavan in Guwahati for a session in the morning hours. - PTI

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday joined the International Yoga Day celebrations at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Kevadia and called on citizens to take a pledge to be healthy to contribute to the country’s development.

Underlining the benefits of the ancient practice, Mr. Mandaviya, who performed yoga asanas along with hundreds of participants, said the citizens of a country need to be healthy for it to become a developed nation, according to a health ministry statement.

Mr. Mandaviya said yoga embodies unity of mind and body, and thought and action. It is a holistic approach that is invaluable to health and well-being. - PTI

M.P. CM happy over spread of yoga across globe, stresses on giving priority to good health

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan celebrated International Yoga Day with some school children and dignitaries on June 21 and expressed happiness that the ancient Indian practice of yoga has now spread across the world. He said that people’s priority in life should be to stay healthy.

Mr. Chouhan rolled out a mat and performed yoga exercises along with students and some dignitaries at his official residence in Bhopal. The main programme was earlier scheduled at the Lal Parade Ground in the presence of school children, but rains on Monday evening forced the organisers to cancel the event there. - PTI

Yoga has no barrier of age, caste, geography or religion and everyone should make the ancient physical fitness regime a part of their daily routine to reap its rich benefits, Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu said on June 21.

Addressing the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations organised by the Ministries of Culture and Ayush, he said, “Yoga is time-tested. Yoga has no barrier, no age, no caste, no region, no religion. That’s why it is universal.” He complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking Yoga to the United Nations and popularising it across the globe. - PTI

On PM Modi’s call, entire world adopted Yoga: Thakur

Union Minister Anurag Thakur on June 21 said it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who explained to the United Nations General Assembly the importance of yoga and appealed to the world to adopt it.

“On his call, all the countries of the world adopted yoga and resolved to celebrate the International Yoga Day every year on June 21. This is a big achievement for India,” the minister for information and broadcasting said during a yoga practice session at Katoch Palace in Sujanpur.

People are often seen performing yoga in corporate houses, offices, shopping malls and airports, Mr. Thakur said, adding ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ is being celebrated with the theme “Yoga for Humanity” at 75 famous historical heritage sites across the country. - PTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21 had breakfast with the erstwhile royal family of Mysuru at the palace, where the famous ‘Mysore pak’ and ‘Mysore masala dosa” were part of the menu.

The PM, who led the Yoga Day celebrations on the premises of the ‘Amba Vilas Palace’, drove back to the palace for breakfast on the invitation from the royal family after inaugurating the ‘Innovative Digital Yoga Exhibition’ at Dasara Exhibition Grounds.

Mysuru royal scion Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar and “Rajmata” Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, earlier in the day had shared the stage with Mr. Modi at the Yoga Day event. - PTI

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Union Minister of State for Finance Dr. Bhagwat Karad led a crowd of nearly 7,500 people in performing yoga on Tuesday morning at the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad on the occasion of the International Yoga Day.

“More and more people have understood the importance of a healthy lifestyle based on yoga and ‘pranayam’ after the coronavirus outbreak,” Mr. Patel said addressing the participants.

The CM also said they would make available qualified yoga trainers will be with the help of the Gujarat State Yog Board, established by the State Government two years back. - PTI

Thousands of people joined the Prime Minister in the mass Yoga demonstration. “This whole universe starts from our own body and soul. The universe starts from us”, Mr. Modi said. “And, Yoga makes us conscious of everything within us and builds a sense of awareness.”
