Injured Lanarkshire thug pulled out two knives and threatened to stab cops

An injured man produced two knives and threatened to stab police officers after they found him bleeding from head wounds.

Barry Healy was remanded in custody when he pleaded guilty to a string of charges at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

It took four officers to subdue the 44-year-old after he finally dropped the blades.

Healy, of Burnblea Gardens, Hamilton, admitted illegal possession of knives, threatening or abusive behaviour and police assault.

The court heard that officers went to the Esso garage in Wellhall Road, Hamilton, around 11pm on May 5 last year.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said: "A member of the public had told them there was a man there in possession of a knife.

"Two officers arrived to find Healy sitting on the ground in the garage forecourt.

"He appeared to be bleeding from cuts to his forehead.

"The officers spoke to him but he became aggressive and when they tried to handcuff him he produced two kitchen knives from his left sleeve.

"He was told to drop the knives but tensed his body and struggled with the officers, shouting 'I'm going to stab yous' and 'Yous are getting done in'.

"Healy eventually released the knives from his grip but continued to struggle. Another two officers arrived and it needed all four to take him to the ground."

One officer suffered a minor cut to his hand, thought to be caused by a knife, and another was bitten on the leg by Healy.

Defence agent Ian Scott acknowledged Healy has previous convictions, but pointed out he hasn't been in jail since 1998.

The solicitor urged Sheriff John Speir to obtain background reports "to see if there is any way of keeping him out of custody".

The sheriff agreed to get reports before sentencing next month, but said the charges were "very serious" and Healy, who had been on bail, was remanded in custody.
