People are currently struggling to make ends meet, which means more customers are turning to second-hand goods to decorate their homes. And savvy shoppers can find beautiful items at a fraction of the cost of buying things new.
We decided to head down to SOFA Project on West Street in Old Market to see what the charity shop had to offer.
The main room is a large open space with a wide range of different furniture at varying prices. I first looked around the sofa section where I found a three-piece leather-look sofa set, a two-seater sofa with two armchairs for £90. While not the most chic-looking sofa it would definitely do the job and looked in good shape.

The next thing I saw on my travels through the store was a chest of drawers. This style of drawers can be bought brand new from IKEA but would cost you around £225. At the SOFA Project, it would set you back £75. There are a few nicks and the top bows a little but this item is a really good price for what it is.

There’s also a small section displaying a few beds that are on offer. Two options really stood out as being a good price were a double Divan bed and a bunk bed. The Divan bed will cost you £65 while the bunk bed is slightly more pricey at £135. A bit further along there was also a dining table that costs £50 and six chairs to go with it that also cost £50.
The store doesn’t just sell furniture, they also sell part-used cans of paint at a range of prices, perfect for those wanting to paint one or two walls.
With rising costs, the SOFA Project here in Bristol has launched an appeal for furniture donations that will help low-income families. The project, which has two stores in Bristol, one on Gloucester Road and one on West Street in Old Market has been running for over 40 years, helping those less fortunate to get the items they need.
Donated goods are used to meet local need in Bristol. The CEO Nicci Peck said “We are conscious that there will be a greater need over the coming months for the type of things we offer as families continue to feel the knock-on economic impact. We will be pleased to receive good quality reusable household goods and furniture people of Bristol can donate to the likes of SOFA Project for reuse. If they do, we can also come out and collect for free!”
If you have any unused furniture or white goods that you no longer need, rather than throwing them out, maybe think about donating them for someone who may be without.
