I tried the Starbucks trick that saves you 55p on your order every time

I’m a big fan of Starbucks as an occasional treat, but occasional treats are becoming even more scarce in the wake of the cost of living crisis, with many unable to justify paying for little luxuries like an iced latte. However, if there’s a way to cut costs and save a few pence on your order, the odd caffeinated pick-me-up is okay, right?

Well, there’s a ‘hack’ doing the rounds on Twitter and TikTok where customers are getting a large iced latte for the same price as a small - and there’s nothing underhand about it.

So naturally, I headed to the Starbucks drive thru to see if it actually works - and it does!

I spotted the trick on Twitter after Daily Star journalist Mollie Quirk wrote: “I tried the Starbucks hack that's floating about and it works! Order an iced latte with no ice. Then ask for a large cup of ice. You'll save 55p and get a large iced latte for the price of a small.”

And that’s exactly what I did. As I pulled up to the window the cashier recited: “Welcome to Starbucks, what can I get started for you?” It was surprisingly difficult to not blurt out my usual order of a caramel cream frappuccino, but I did manage to request a small iced latte, with no ice.

“Anything else, or is that everything for you?” - I went on to order my large cup of ice, and headed up to the window to pay my £3.05.

The staff said nothing about what might be considered an unusual request, but at least it’s a simpler one than some of the things I’ve seen requested on TikTok lately.

Within a few minutes I was in possession of my two cups - luckily, my car has three cup holders, so I wasn’t stuck for space either. I parked up, and tried out the hack for myself to see if I could save 55p on my iced lattes from now on.

I did notice that my large cup wasn’t full to the top with ice, and was only about two thirds full, however, the small iced latte wasn't exactly brimming either. When pouring the latte from the small cup into the large, it did nearly fill it to capacity - a little more ice and it’d definitely have done it. In Mollie's video above, you can see that her cup contained much more ice and the liquid filled the cup.

It’d say it’s pretty safe to say that it’s a trick that works, and one to keep up your sleeve next time you plan to order.

If you enjoy an iced latte once a week from the global chain, it could save you a whopping £28.60 - or, with small iced lattes costing £3.05, it’s the equivalent of of nine free drinks, and you can’t turn your nose up at that.
