I tried Iceland's new £4 'low calorie' pizza and it's a game changer

Iceland has recently collaborated with fitness brand 'MyProtein' and the result is a bunch of low calorie, high protein ready meals.

Recently, I've been attempting to calorie count, and although I don't stick to it every single day, it's nice to feel like I have some control over what I eat. I've never been a big fan of crazy diets, and watching how many calories I eat so far has been relatively easy going, and somewhat successful.

Regardless of whether you're wanting to watch your calories or not, the MyProtein range promises to bring 'healthy and convenient meals' that doesn't compromise on taste. I'm certainly all about convenience, and sometimes can't be bothered to whip up a healthy low calorie meal after a long day at work.

After browsing through the new MyProtein product range online, one particular ready meal caught my eye that is often my weakness- pizza. Papa Johns, Domino's, Pizza Express you name it, I love it, and any form of oven pizza for a quick Friday night tea has got my vote.

Just for context, the full Iceland MyProtein range includes:

  • Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese 31g Protein/415kcal - £4
  • Singapore Noodles 45g Protein/6g Fibre/527kcal - £4.75
  • Chicken Tikka & Rice 34g Protein/ 320kcal - £4

I decided to try out the Chicken Curry Pizza priced at £4, considering it's a combination of two of my favourite things. I wasn't too sure what to expect, but I actually ended up being really impressed.

The pizza

At first, I thought £4 for a pizza was pretty expensive, until I remembered just how much I can easily spend on Papa John's on a Friday night so I decided to stop moaning. In terms of frozen pizza, I usually go for something like a Ristorante Pizza from Asda which is normally about £2 - so this was double the price.

To look at, the packaging was vibrant and pretty expensive looking, and it definitely stood out in the Iceland frozen section. At first glance, I thought the pizza looked quite small, but it turned out to be really filling.

Once cooked, the smell of the pizza filled my whole kitchen - and it was unreal. The cheese was bubbling and oozing on top and there was a good amount of it.

But how exactly did it taste? Well, let's just say it was a game changer. The curry flavouring wasn't too strong, but it had a good kick to it, and the toppings were bursting with flavour.

Topped with chicken, red onion, red peppers and spinach, the pizza packed a punch, and it only took half to fill me up which is a rarity let me tell you. The base and crust were a little crunchy, and had a sightly different consistency to the dough I usually have.

It was a lot lighter and not as heavy as your usual takeaway pizza, which I actually preferred. For me, the taste was super unique, and I'll definitely be tucking into this again as a treat.

The verdict

Don't get me wrong, a takeaway pizza is sometimes a must, but if you're feeling naughty and want a lighter low calorie option - this is the way forward. It took a mere 18 minutes to cook in the oven, and was very convenient.

I'll definitely be trying the Meat Feast pizza next, but I'm not sure if I'll prefer it to this pizza/curry combo - what's not to love? Shoppers can purchase the £4 MyProtein Chicken Curry Pizza here. Browse the full MyProtein range here.
