McDonald’s and Burger King have both released new ‘crispy chicken burgers’ and I thought I’d both put them to the test (someone’s got to!)
The new McCrispy burger replaces the much-loved ‘Chicken Legend’ burger, which some fans weren’t particularly happy about. Burger King have also recently launched a ‘Memphis Crispy Chicken’ burger to rival the new addition - so I thought I’d put them both to the test.
I’m a big fast food fan, and although I know I probably shouldn’t indulge as much as I probably do, I was very intrigued to see just exactly how nice this new permanent McDonald’s burger was. I took a trip to the McDonald’s and Burger King Drive Thru with an empty stomach and an equally hungry boyfriend to help me take on the challenge.

The McDonald’s McCrispy Burger
I’ll be honest, I’m a bit of a Maccies fiend, so I was so excited to try the new permanent burger. I usually go for a beef burger when I visit McDonald's, so it was a nice change to tuck into a chicken one for once.
The new McCrispy burger features a sourdough bun with sesame seeds and a crunchy chicken breast marinated in black pepper and cayenne. It also includes mayonnaise with cracked black pepper which sounds very scrumptious indeed.
At 484 calories, the burger definitely doesn’t look as messy as some I’ve seen, with quite a delicate aesthetic I was actually relatively surprised about. The sourdough bun makes the burger seem a little more ‘posh’ than usual, and as a whole the burger is very neat.
But exactly how much crunch does the ‘McCrispy’ offer? Well, the answer to that is a decent amount. I wouldn’t say the crunchiness of the burger blew me away, but it was definitely crunchier than most chicken burgers I’ve had.
The black pepper mayo was an absolutely delicious feature, and in my opinion completely made the burger. In fact, I’d go as far to say that it could've done with a bit more mayonnaise - but I am a bit of a mayo obsessive.
The burger on its own would cost £4.99 which is a pretty hefty fee for one burger if you ask me, but I did also add some additions to my order. For a meal with fries, a drink and some mozzarella dippers my bill came to £8.38.
Would I say the burger was worth the price? Generally, yes. At first I was a little put off by the price of the burger, but it did have a nice premium taste to it that you can’t get from a standard mayo chicken.
Highlights for me were the black pepper mayo and the sourdough bun. The chicken was a little dry in some parts but it still had a delicious flavour.
The Burger King Memphis Crispy Chicken Burger
Burger King is often a treat for me once in a blue moon, purely because of the sheer price of the burgers. That’s why it came as no surprise that the Memphis Crispy Chicken burger was priced at a whopping £9.
For a Burger King meal with a side of six chili cheese bites, my bill came to £12.01 which was relatively pricey for some fast food. However, I knew that would be the case, so I tucked in with no regrets.
The Memphis Crispy Chicken burger features crispy chicken breast sandwiched between crispy bacon slices, melted American cheese, three onion rings, creamy mayo and Burger King’s signature smoky BBQ sauce all in a toasted brioche bun.
I was absolutely blown away by this burger, and would go as far to say it might now be officially my second favourite Burger King burger (after the Bacon Double Cheeseburger, of course). There were so many different flavours in the burger, which is something that McDonald’s lacked slightly.
The onion rings were a delicious touch, and I really liked the smoky BBQ sauce - although it might not be for everyone. Granted, aesthetically this burger wasn’t a patch on the McDonald’s one, but it tasted unreal.
The 'crispy chicken' wasn’t quite as crispy as the McDonald’s burger, but this burger was nowhere near as dry as the McDonald’s one. The BBQ sauce and creamy mayo worked incredibly well together, and I was obsessed after one bite.
One downside about this burger was the bacon, it was slightly dry and fatty, but the flavours really made up for it. I’ll definitely be snapping up this burger again, even though it was a little more on the expensive side.
The verdict
As much as I love McDonald’s, Burger King’s new Memphis Crispy Chicken was a winner for me by a country mile. The flavours on the burger were absolutely amazing and very moreish.
Although this burger wasn’t as crispy as the McDonald’s one, it offered a little bit more pizzazz and excitement as opposed to some crispy chicken and a bit of peppered mayo. I wasn’t expecting the Burger King burger to be as good as it was, and I was very pleasantly surprised.
I’m definitely not knocking the McDonald’s burger, because it was really tasty and aesthetically pleasing, but it just wasn’t as good as the Burger King one in terms of flavour, in my opinion.
If you’re a fan of BBQ sauce, you might well prefer the Memphis Crispy Chicken, but if you prefer a more subdued flavour, McDonald’s is your best bet. It’s safe to say that I’ll no doubt be tucking into both again, because they were both good burgers as a whole.
