Finding cheap alternatives for some of our favourite meals is becoming a bigger thing, especially with the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. Sometimes the lower priced products are pretty good substitutes but other times not so much.
One cheap item people have been trying recently is tinned burgers and we were intrigued to see what they were like. Having seen that a man on TikTok had tried Westlers tinned burgers in onion gravy from Home Bargains, I decided to head down to my local store to see if I could find some to try.
Unfortunately I couldn’t find any in my local Home Bargains but I headed to Asda as according to Google they sell them too and thankfully they did. The tin cost me £1.50 and contains four burgers in an onion gravy sauce.

From the picture on the outside of the tin, the burgers don’t look too appealing and I wasn’t looking forward to trying them.
Luckily the tin, like most other tinned food, had cooking instructions on the back of the tin. You could cook these in two ways, either in the microwave or on the hob. As these are already pre-cooked you don’t need to cook the burgers for very long at all, so a perfect item if you’re looking for a quick and convenient dinner.
Upon opening the tin I was hit with a very strong onion smell, which I was not the biggest fan of, making my kitchen stink. The sight I was met with wasn’t very pretty either, covered in a lot of sauce, the burgers didn’t look overly appealing but I was still going to try them to see what they were like.
I decided I would cook them in the microwave as that was probably the easiest way to cook them. The man from TikTok fried his in an attempt to crisp them up a little bit. After cooking for two minutes, I took it out and gave the sauce a little stir before putting it back in for a further minute.
What I got at the end of the cooking time was not dissimilar to what I put into the microwave, just heated up. Taking my first tentative bite, I found they weren’t as hideous as I thought they were going to be based on the smell, but they definitely weren’t great. If you’re looking for a cheap alternative to a burger, then these are not it, they don't taste or have the texture of a burger at all.
I found them to be very mushy and I just couldn’t get over the smell. While some may love these, I’m definitely not a fan and I will not be rushing to try them again any time soon.
