I compared all the own-brand luxury sausages from Tesco, Aldi, Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons and one was a tasteless waste of money

The summer weather is upon us and it’s the perfect time to get the barbecue out and grill some delicious burgers and hotdogs. With so many flavours to choose from - caramelised onion to leek and apple - it’s easy to get overwhelmed while picking the perfect pork sausage. So, I went to the local supermarkets to see what they had on offer.

I compared own-brand luxury pork sausages from Tesco, Aldi, Waitrose, Asda and Morrisons to see which was the best value for money for customers.

While some punched above their weight and delivered on the luxury taste test, others left more to be desired. We tried them all and rated them on both taste and how good the value is.

Tesco

Taste test: Tesco’s finest is usually one for the tastebuds, but its gluten-free Lincolnshire sausages (the only ones in the shop) were missing flavour, despite being infused with herbs and a combination of white and black pepper.

Value: £2.75 for six sausages. Paying nearly £3 for tasteless sausages is disappointing and it wasn’t cheaper for Clubcard users.

Overall rating : 5/10

Aldi

Taste test: These were the only pork sausages in store and I’m glad I managed to get my hands on them. Aldi’s caramelised onion pork sausages are one for the tastebuds. However, marks were deducted for their size in comparison to other supermarket brands.

Value: £1.99 for six sausages. Priced at the cheapest, I would say you definitely get your value for money with Aldi’s caramelised onion sausages.

Overall rating : 9/10

Waitrose

Taste test: Waitrose is classed as a more luxurious supermarket, with their food items generally costing more than your other own brands. It lives up to the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ with its pepper, mace and nutmeg Cumberland pork sausages.

Value: £3.60 for six sausages. It’s on the pricier side, but worth every penny.

Overall rating: 9/10

Asda

A pork sausage from Asda. (Angharad Thomas)

Taste test: You cannot go wrong with a classic Cumberland pork sausage. Like the others, it's infused with cracked black pepper, but despite being gluten-free, it didn’t lose any flavour. However, marks are dropped due to it shrinking significantly more than the others in the oven.

Value: £2.75 for six sausages. Not the cheapest of the lot, but I would definitely buy again.

Overall rating : 7/10

Morrisons

Taste test: Compared to the others, these pork sausages tasted a bit rubbery and had no flavour.

Value: £2.50 for six sausages. It's a decent price, but you can get tastier ones for less.

Overall rating: 4/10

Verdict: The decision for the best pork sausage - by comparing its taste and price - was a tough one. My top three were Aldi, Waitrose and Asda, but there could only be one winner.

This time, the winner is Aldi - followed closely by Waitrose - but Aldi's caramelised onion pork sausages were the tastiest and without doubt the best value for money.
