When the weather is as stunning as it has been in recent weeks, taking a trip with your loved ones can make sunny days even better. One couple hoped a coastal break would be the perfect holiday - especially with the wife five months pregnant.
But their plans were thrown into disarray and the trip cancelled by the furious woman after her husband "abandoned" her on the train while he leapt off. The hubby headed online in a bid to tell his side of the story but was met with just as angry a reaction from Reddit users.
The 29-year-old and his wife, 25, were heading towards their destination when an announcement came through that their train was to be diverted. They were only a short while into their journey when the message came through but they needed to act quickly to make sure they didn't end up going the wrong way.
Posting on Reddit's Am I The A*****e forum, the husband wrote: "I’m 29 and my wife is 25. She’s also five months pregnant. Recently we decided to go on holiday together - nothing fancy, just to the coast, which meant we had to get a train.
"About twenty minutes into our journey, we heard an announcement over the speakers that the train was being diverted, which meant it wasn’t going to stop at the station we needed anymore. As it was saying this, the train was coming to a stop at the next station."
Panicked, the man told his wife that they would need to get off at the stop or they wouldn't be able to get where they needed to go. He grabbed two of their suitcases and an army-style backpack and hurried off the train, leaving his wife onboard with the final suitcase.
He continued: "I couldn’t believe it when I looked round and saw she hadn’t gotten off - she was trying to grab our third suitcase. Unfortunately it was too late, and even as I rushed to the doors, they closed. My wife looked like she wanted to kill me, and the train pulled away with her on it."
The man turned to social media to ask if he was in the wrong after his fuming wife cancelled the holiday there and then, and his father-in-law branded him an idiot.
He continued: "I called her to tell her to get off at the next stop and I’d get the next one and meet her, but she was absolutely irate and told me the holiday was cancelled and she was going home. To top it off, she told her family and mine and they’re all furious at me for 'abandoning' a pregnant woman on a train 'headed God knows where' with a heavy suitcase.
"My father in law told me I was an idiot for what I’d done. I feel like I was in the right, but my wife and family have other ideas. So Reddit…AITA?"
If the husband was looking for a sympathetic response from Reddit users, he did not find one. Many were furious at his spur-of-the-moment decision that led to him leaving his pregnant partner alone on the train.
One wrote: "Why panic over something so little? You could have just stayed on the train and discussed with your wife what you guys were gonna do. You sound like one of those people that would reverse on the highway because you took the wrong exit, instead of just taking the safer but longer way around."
second replied: "You panicked and acted very rashly. You didn’t ask her if you, as a couple, should get off. You didn’t make sure your pregnant wife was able to keep up. Very inconsiderate all around.
"You could have asked her what she felt like doing. You could have been chivalrous and had her get off first, or at least stand in the door to make sure it doesn’t close before she could disembark."
And while another user felt that the wife may have gone too far by cancelling the whole trip, they still branded the hubby an "a*****e". They wrote: "You should’ve figured that your pregnant wife may not be as nimble as you are.
"I can’t imagine not taking the time to make sure she’s with you, or at least impeding the train doors, something to that effect (easier said than done, depending on the railroad, in fairness). Your wife overreacted IMO by cancelling the entire vacation, but you definitely screwed up."
One user did have sympathy for the man, saying: "This is an incredibly common mistake that tourists make in my city (and even generally, this is a fairly well-known trope in media). And yes, there’s no reason to panic, there will always been another train, but sometimes tourists do!
"Families or friends get separated by accident. I’ve even seen children get separated from their parents; there’s even protocols for this. It’s not the end of the world.
"Why on earth would this merit canceling the entire vacation when it’s so easily fixable and such a minor bump in the grand scheme of things and clearly an accident? That’s a wild overreaction esp. from your wife and her family."
