Hundreds of passengers stranded in airport overnight as flights are cancelled

Hundreds of passengers have been stuck in Belfast International Airport after several flights were cancelled.

Angry travellers criticised what they saw as "incompetence and ineptitude" when they found themselves stranded in the travel hub late last night and early this morning.

Some easyJet services to Bristol, Gatwick and Faro were cancelled, while holiday flights linking the likes of Malaga, Kos and Dalaman have all been disrupted.

On the other end of things, would-be passengers in Kos said they were still on the Greek island long after their TUI flights back to Belfast were due to depart.

Clare McCallan was one of the weary customers who found themselves stuck in the Belfast terminal late last night.

"Never in my life have I experienced incompetence and ineptitude like this," she said.

"Myself and my family have been in Belfast Airport since 1.30pm to board a 4.30pm flight which was delayed due to 'catering reasons' then at half seven you saw fit to totally cancel the flight.

"Waiting two hours to get our luggage back with an exhausted three-year-old and all we want to do now is get home.

"You have totally destroyed a family holiday to Portugal we have been looking forward to since June of last year with no reason whatsoever and treating every passenger here like dirt.

"You should be totally ashamed of the way you have conducted yourselves today.

"I expect a full refund of our flights and the extra £120 my partner had to pay for overweight luggage.

"Do not give me your 'no refund bulls***. I suggest you deal with this promptly."

Chloe Johnston was another unhappy customer, having been due to travel from Gatwick back home to Northern Ireland on Sunday night with EasyJet.

"We were told it was cancelled. No explanation was given and there were no staff on scene to help with enquiries or moving people on to next flight," Chloe told ITV.

While Chloe managed to get booked onto a flight this morning, other passengers on her original flight have only been able to get a seat this evening.

Rosaleen Gormley was left stranded in England last night after her easyJet flight back to Belfast from Bristol was cancelled.

She was among the dozens of people attempting to book a hotel at the last minute, causing easyJet app to crash.

David Harrigan similarly found himself battling logistical issues in the small hours.

"Flight to Bristol from Belfast cancelled. App wouldn't let us book a hotel. Took one hour to get through to customer service now still here waiting on a hotel and transfer," he tweeted.

"No flights until Tuesday. No staff at airport to help. What's going on?"

An easyJet spokesperson said: “easyJet can confirm that three flights from Belfast on 22 May were cancelled for varying reasons.

"We did all possible to minimise the impact of the disruption for our customers and customers were able to transfer to an alternative flight free of charge, or receive a voucher or a refund.

"The quickest and easiest way for customers to book a hotel and transfer to an alternative easyJet flight is always via Manage Bookings or through the easyJet app, and we also had a number of dedicated staff at Belfast airport available to assist.

"Customers can also contact us by phone to discuss other rerouting options, in line with EU261, and we always aim to reroute customers within 24 hours.

"While this was outside of our control, we are very sorry for the inconvenience caused by the cancellations. The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is our highest priority.”

TUI apologised to customers travelling from Kos to Belfast, saying the flight has been disrupted "due to operational issues".

"Everyone has been able to stay in their hotels and meals have been provided. We are in touch and will update them with revised travel plans as soon as we can," the spokesperson said.

"We understand that delays are frustrating and we thank all impacted customers for their patience.

"Customers on this flight are entitled to compensation in line with regulations and have already been sent information on how to submit a claim."

A spokesperson for the airport said: “We would like to thank the airport staff who were on site to help those passengers affected by the cancelled flights by assisting with baggage, providing information, and helping them plan their onward journeys.

"We are working hard to support all our airline and airport partners to ensure that the difficulties encountered last night are not repeated. We would encourage passengers to check with their airlines in advance of travel and to contact them directly about rearranging flights or securing refunds.”
