HUMZA Yousaf has become the second candidate bidding to be SNP leader to sign up to the “first major hustings” of the race.
Ash Regan had previously confirmed she would take part in the event, planned for March 12 by the SNP Trade Union Group (SNPTUG).
Yousaf’s confirmation means Kate Forbes is the only candidate yet to confirm if she will attend the in-person hustings.
The SNPTUG, the party’s largest affiliate body representing some 12,000 members, said that the “political conversation is about the leader of the Scottish Government as well as our party” – and so the hustings would have a wider focus.
A spokesperson for the group said it would be focused on “issues of primary concern to all Scotland’s working people and communities – particularly its 600,000 trade unionists – arising from the current cost-of-living crisis”.
A spokesperson for Yousaf told The National: “Humza is very much looking forward to the opportunity to speak with SNP trade union members.
“Humza values the working relationships that he has built with trade unions during recent negotiations and remains absolutely committed to continued meaningful dialogue, including on the creation of a National Care Service.”
The National understands that there is likely to also be a run of regional hustings for the candidates to speak to party members across the country.
It also looks likely that there will be televised debates between the candidates, with both the BBC and STV having been in touch with the SNP.
The voting will run from midday on March 13 until midday on March 27. The winner will be announced that same afternoon.
