A member of the public spotted a skeleton in the grounds of a building site in Gloucester. It was found underneath the former Debenhams building in the centre.
It is currently being transformed into a campus for the University of Gloucestershire. An eagle-eyed member of the public who was on the upper floors of the building opposite the construction site saw the skeleton remains in the ground, reports Gloucestershire Live.
Archaeologists became aware the former Debenhams building had been built on a cemetery dating back to the middle ages last summer. The work on the site for the university is being carried out by construction firm Morgan Sindall which says it is working to make sure any skeletal remains are preserved.
A Morgan Sindall Construction spokesperson said: "As we are in the process of excavating a medieval cemetery we are working closely with local archaeologists to ensure any skeletal remains we find are preserved. We cannot confirm any more details at this stage.”
Bristol's Debenhams store in Broadmead has stood empty for years but work is finally underway to bring it back into use after a new company took over the site. Construction workers have begun stripping the site to make way for a new development in the Bristol Shopping Quarter.
A document from Bristol City Council seen by BristolLive names a London company, 33 Horsefair Ltd, as primarily liable for business rates of the building. Companies House named Louise Staniforth and Nicholas Winsley as directors since the firm was established in November last year, with AEWUK owning at least 75 per cent or more of the company's shares.
AEWUK, one of the world’s largest real estate asset managers, lists eleven Bristol properties in its portfolio. This includes a number of other sites in Broadmead, Union Street and Queens Square along with Hengrove Leisure Park and Whitehall Trading Estate. AEKUK declined to comment when approached by BristolLive.
