How Aldi, Waitrose, Sainsbury's, Co-op and Tesco tea bags compare

It’s complete heaven when you pop the kettle on after a long day, maybe put the telly on and have a few biscuits. The four best-selling tea brands in the UK for 2021 were revealed as Tetley, PG Tips, Yorkshire Tea and Twinings. Community Reporter Keimae Blake went out on a mission to find the best cup of tea, here’s how it went...

I have always loved a cup of tea and, in my household, the Diplomat Red Label tea bags from Aldi for only £1.49 are very popular.

I do love a frothy cappuccino every now and then but a cup of tea will always be my go to.

I like my tea strong, no sugar.

First up is Yorkshire Tea. At the back of my cupboard, I was glad I found these. You can’t go wrong with a cup of Yorkshire Tea. For 40 tea bags from Tesco, these are only £1.60 - that’s an extremely reasonable price and, for many people, they’d be willing to pay a bit more for a classic cuppa.

For anyone who’s never had a cup of tea before, I think starting them off with a cup of Yorkshire would leave them very happy.

Like Yorkshire Tea, Tetley and PG Tips are also a popular favourite. I prefer PG Tips over Tetley as the tea bags not only taste amazing but they smell really good, too. A cup of PG Tips is hard to refuse. With PG Tips being up there with Yorkshire as a perfect cup of tea for someone who's never had them before, they too deserve a 10/10 with Tetley being close behind with an eight.

I never really shop at Waitrose but when I saw the Waitrose own brand tea bags, 80 for £1.15, I thought I might as well give them a go and they weren’t bad at all. You never really hear anyone mentioning Waitrose tea bags either so these might be an underrated cup of tea worth trying.

For my next cup of tea, I tried Twinings - and don’t let the fancy packaging fool you (sorry if you drink Twinings) but I thought it was awful. It's quite hard to describe the perfect cup of tea in general but, for me, Twinings won't be a cup of tea I drink again. The tea bags were overpoweringly sour and, as my cup of tea started to cool down, it just taste like warm water - it’s just lacking the tea taste but maybe I'm being harsh as Twinings sell other flavours of tea. 'English Breakfast' wasn't for me but maybe I'd enjoy another flavour from the company that is amongst the top favourite teas in the UK.

For £3.50 in the Co-Op I won't, however, be buying Twinings anytime soon.

From Sainsbury's and Tesco, I tried their own brand tea bags and, as the own brand from Aldi is one of my go to teas, it looks like Sainsbury's and Tesco are strong contenders with them tasting pretty much the same. Both tea bags were strong and earthly tasting and comforting. You can’t knock own brand products and, with Tesco's own brand tea bags being £1.15, and Sainsbury's just 5p more, you can't go wrong. Both tea bags get another 10/10 for me.

So our winner are: Yorkshire Tea, PG Tips, Sainsbury's own brand and Tesco own brand tea bags.
